What we changed after our first 50 client projects

Somewhere around project thirty, we noticed the projects that ran smoothly all had one thing in common: a paid, fixed-scope discovery phase before any development started. The ones that didn't, didn't.

Discovery isn't a sales tactic — it's where we find the assumptions that would otherwise surface three weeks into a sprint. What does 'done' actually mean for this feature? Which stakeholder's sign-off actually matters? What's the one integration nobody mentioned in the kickoff call?

We made it mandatory after project forty. Every engagement now starts with a two-week discovery sprint that ends in a written scope both sides sign off on — not because we don't trust our clients, but because ambiguity is the single biggest cause of scope creep, and writing it down kills most of it before it starts.

Fifty projects taught us that the best client relationships aren't the ones with the fewest problems. They're the ones where problems get caught in week two instead of week eight.
